Natu Myers
Hi, everybody. This is Natu Myers back with the Raises.com Top Capital Raiser Show, where we deconstruct some of the top performers in the realms of business development, capital raising, and so on. And today I'm with a very special guest. I introduced Kenny Bricks. So we're good friends. We met in the gym about almost like, what, like eight years ago or so. And I noticed that he was a bit different than everybody else. I noticed that he was a business owner, and he actually gave me some great tips and advice early in my business career. So Kenny is the author of the Face Yourself Method. And this book and his new offer go into helping business owners scale in the realms of different services and mindset issues that founders have, especially when it comes to having a successful business. Because that's something that we always look like. Kenny, it's nice to meet you.
Kenny Bricks
Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you for having me today.
Natu Myers
No worries. No worries. I mean, look, it's been great having you, and I've been watching your business grow over the years. So maybe we can start by just educating the audience about where you come from and how you got started in developing your businesses and what line of business you're in.
Kenny Bricks
All right. So thank you very much again. I have multiple companies. I've been doing this for quite a while now. I'm 15 years in the game with my first found company. I have the Home and Plus Contracting. Home and Plus Contracting, we're a construction company. We do anything from renovation kitchens, basements, flooring additions. We have an architect in the office as well. We do drawings. And now we also offer financing for clients. I also have a company called The Exit Lounge, which is a restaurant. Great restaurant. It's kind of like a mix between Joey's and Moxie's, a fusion restaurant. We have the greatest chef in the restaurant. His name is Chef Upav. Yeah. Nice. And I also have an entertainment center, skating rink, arcade virtual reality. It's called Skate and Play. 20,000 square feet of pure fun.
Natu Myers
So, see, the thing is, you know, a lot of people listening, you know, a lot of you are either in HVAC or you're in services. So, you know, many will be really curious to see how you how are you able to have these brick and mortar businesses, you know, the skate and play and any exit lounge, for example. So how did you end up getting into those businesses?
Kenny Bricks
I first I had my construction company and my mom passed away three, four years, three years ago. And when she passed away, I spent a lot of time with her. And then when I spent a lot of time with her, she had explained to me on her deathbed that the only thing she cared about at that moment was the memories that she had, the love that she shared. She didn't think about money. She really was thinking about the connection that she made during her life. And that's the only thing that mattered to her. And so when I would talk to her, I'd be like, okay. She's like, Kenny, I want you to live your life and create more connections, focus on love, focus on bringing people together. And then this opportunity came at the same time, this investment opportunity came at the same time, which it was a buddy of mine who reached out to me, Miche, and he was like, yo, I'm working on this project right now. And, you know, we need you on this project. Like, we could, this is the vision, and we could blow it up. And then I was, like, dumbfounded. I was like, this is a great opportunity. I love this. You know, it goes with everything, all the values that my mom had talked about. Yeah. And so I invested in a project. We came in together. We made it happen. And I have also a big team. And we got all the partners together, and we made it happen.
Natu Myers
That's crazy. That's crazy. And so you're talking about, like, the whole, so you took the real estate and everything, and then, you know, did you acquire the real estate and the facility? Or was it more, so when you said you made it happen, are you talking about like the, was it like a franchise? Was it like a piece of real estate?
Kenny Bricks
No, I created this business from the ground up. Wow. Literally. All the systems. I studied systems. I know how to scale and I know how to systemize and scale a business. So I've been doing that for years. I've grown businesses. I've sold businesses and I just kept going, right? And I have a couple of successful businesses right now as you speak. What happened is we came in, we talked about the idea. There was another idea starting before that, and I just came in. I gave my input. I kind of restructured the whole business, and we went with it and it blew up And today it a very great successful business and we have plenty of employees and it a staple in this city Yeah it is
Natu Myers
So this other side with I believe the home services business as well how do you balance the three Because do you just delegate and you kind of manage everything as you go, or how does that work?
Kenny Bricks
I have an amazing team. Okay. And without my team, I wouldn't be able to do what I do today. It's very important as you know you make your first thousand bucks you could do it on your own your first hundred thousand dollars you make on your own but once you want to start to reach a million you need a team and then if you want to reach 10 million you need systems it's true it's true
Natu Myers
Tell me a little bit about uh you know in getting the deal done with acquiring or i guess you know starting the those brick and mortar businesses for a second like did you use financing or did you bootstrap? How did you end up starting that initial?
Kenny Bricks
Well, the construction business, I started from nothing and that was just a grind. So I'll explain to you how I started that, how I started first. But those businesses, I was the bank. Lucky for me, I had enough funds and the team to make it happen because I'm in construction. So I'm able to build whatever and I was blessed enough to be able to make it happen. I started a construction company back in 2010. Yeah. And when I started, I didn't know I was going to start construction by the way. What happened is that a buddy came to my house and I used to own my house and he came to my house and was like, hey Kenny, can I help you with some tile work and let's do some interlock together and just go buy the material and we'll do it together. And I was like, okay, yeah, cool man. Let's go. So we went to BMR. BMR was close by to my house back then. Yeah. What's BMR for those who don't know? Builder, materials, some place. It's basically like Corona, Home Depot. Got it. Okay? Got it. You could buy renovation stuff. Yeah. So I went with him there, and we bought everything on clearance. And then when we came back to my house, we started doing the work. Okay. We were doing the work together. Buddy was like, yo, man, you're really good at this. Man, it's like, man, you know how to measure this. And I was like, yeah, you know, I got my thing, and I can do my thing. Then I was like, well, you know what? I kind of like doing this. He's like, you do? I'm like, yeah. I'm like, how do people, how much people charge for this? When he told me, I was like, man, there's money here, man. Like, what am I doing? I'm doing dumb shit. At the time I was young, I was doing dumb shit. You know, I was like, I got to do something better with my life. I was already, at that point, in that moment in my life, I was already trying to look for change. I was looking for something. I wanted to change my life. I didn't know where I was heading, but I just knew I had to go somewhere else. I knew I needed a different direction. And it so happened that he planted a seed that day and I was like, okay, I'm good at this. I don't know how I'm going to do it. I was thinking big. I was like, listen, how about you have tools, you have the knowledge of construction, I could help you out. I know business because my whole life I did business regardless if it was like wherever I was. I came from the streets. From the streets I knew business. You bring the same integrity, the same mindset into the legit world, you're going to do something successful because at the end of the day it's all about your word and integrity and doing something right. I did that. So I brought it. I was like, listen, man, let me handle the business part of the business. And you handle the construction part of it. We'll make a lot of money. We'll blow up. I guarantee you, just trust me. It's like, I bet. So what happened is that the next day, all night, actually, I was thinking about what am I going to do? What am I going to do? What's next? Like, what's the business? What's the business? It's construction. Okay, it's construction. What am I really into? I'm like, we're going to do flooring, kitchens, basements, additions. Since, okay, okay, okay, what's the name for this company? And I'm thinking, I'm thinking, I'm like, home, home and what, home and what? Then I just, I'm like, we're going to do it all. Then I had this picture in my head. I envisioned just the biggest company. I was like, you know what, like, I want to be like Walmart. I want to be like Zealous. I want to be able to offer everything in my construction. I want to be able to have multiple streams of income. That's all I was thinking about. So I was like, I'll call it home, home, home and, home and, home and plus. And that's how I came with the name Home and Plus, my construction company. Then I called Buddy I'm like okay I got the name it's gonna be Home and Plus let's get it tomorrow I'm gonna start making flyers on my computer I didn't even know how I didn't know I didn't have no sale no marketing team no nothing but I was like you know we're doing this from the ground up so I started doing flyers on my computer they were just shitty flyers but I just made flyers on my computer I'm not even a designer a graphic designer nothing I know nothing I'm just picturing stuff I'm just putting stuff together putting hey construction this and that Put the flyers, put my phone number, my cell phone at the time. And then I print a bunch of flyers, maybe 100, 200 copies. And I go in my neighborhood. At the time, I used to live in a neighborhood in Orleans. And it's a condo. It's a bunch of condos next to each other. Condo Corp, right? A bunch of townhomes and whatnot. So I'm doing door-to-door. Next day, next morning, I'm doing door-to-doors. I'm talking to everybody. Oh, door-to-door sales. Door-to-door sales. I'm like, I got to sell this product. Like somebody needs, the thing's like, it doesn't matter what kind of, like anything that you have to sell. If nobody knows who you are, you're not selling shit. You're not going to make money if you don't have people to show it to, if you don't put yourself out there. First things first, when you have a business, put yourself out there. It doesn't matter how, put it out. So I did door to door. Knocked on every single door. Knocked on every single door. Then I had a neighbor that opened the door and she's like, hey, Kenny, how you doing? By the way, I just started this company. I'm doing renovations, kitchens, basements, flooring, whatever you need. I can make it happen. It was summertime. She's like, you know what, Kenny? My fence in the back needs some work, and my interlock needs a lifting relay. I'm like, okay, cool. Boom, boom. I go measure on the spot. Close it for six grand. Bang. Close it for six grand. She gives me a deposit, 2,500 bucks. I'm like, bang, perfect. Take the deposit. I go see homeboy. I'm like, hey, yo, I got us a job, my friend. Let's go. Get ready. We're starting next weekend. Let's go. Let's make it happen. He's like, all right, cool. He's all excited. I'm excited. We're going. We'll go to the house on Friday. Yeah. We go start doing the work. And after the day of work, it was an amazing day. We lifted all the stone. We started taking down the fence and getting everything ready. The end of the day, we go back to my house. We go celebrate. We have a little drink together. We start chatting, you know, talking. And he looks at me. He's like, okay, Kenny, give me a thousand bucks out of the deposit. And I was like, excuse me? He's like, yeah, yeah. Give me half the deposit, man. Like, you know, give me a thousand bucks. You know, you keep a thousand bucks. We keep 500 for the job. I'm like, no. I'm like, that's not how it works. He's like, well, what do you mean? I'm like well the deposit is to make sure the job gets done and then once we are done the job and we have put all expenses on the side we split the profit we don't know what the profit is we can't start spending the money because it's not our money yet till the job is complete it's like ah bro what do you know about that bro the jobs gets good bro we're gonna kill I'm like no I don't know that all I know is I was entrusted with the deposit to do the job right and I have integrity and I'm not going to spend the money till we've done the job correctly. And when we have done the job correctly, we will split the profit 50-50 like we had agreed. It's like, you know what, man? Who made you the boss? You think you know it all? You don't even know how to do that. You know what? Forget you. Forget this. Take this job. Shove it up your ass. True story. That was a buddy of mine. You think you're the boss and not figure it out. Takes his tools, like pay me for the day and you figure out the rest. I'm like, okay, cool. I'll give him 300 Have a good day. So all night now I got to figure out how to finish the job because I started something, I going to finish it Yeah Doesn matter Yeah Right So all night I on the school of YouTube Figuring out this project I can make this up I on the school of YouTube I'm checking everything out. I'm reading. I'm learning. I'm like, okay, got to do this, this, this. So then after that, I call a buddy of mine. I'm like, listen, man, I'll pay you 20 bucks an hour. Come help me. I'll finish this project. And we're going to have a couple of days of work. But I'll get you paid. I'll make paid. Come help me. It's a good cause. He's like, I bet. But he showed up at my house. I didn't have the tools. I have a buddy of mine. Back then he used to be called Riva's Pawn Shop. Oh yeah? Okay. Okay? But now it's called Arlie's Pawn Shop. It's a stepson that took over the business. That's another amazing story by the way. Shout out to my boy Arlie. Went over there and then I was like, yo, I need a quick cut. I needed some equipment, whatever. He gave me a sick deal on all the equipment. I told him the story, boom, boom. They hooked me up. I went back to the job. I went back to the job and now that's what I use the deposit money for because it's to finish the job. See? So I went in, went and finished the job with my buddy, took us a couple of days, boom, boom, job was all free and mint, client was happy, paid me the rest of the job and that's my first job with Home and Plus contracting.
Natu Myers
You have very strong beliefs, I noticed, even you telling the story, because for example, you were saying, hey, we don't know the profit. Until we know the profit, let's just wait until we finish the thing and then we split the profit. And another one was, if I start something, I'll finish it. Where do these beliefs come from?
Kenny Bricks
Like I said, I'm from the streets, man. Your word was everything. So back then, if you didn't, something was wrong, you might not get your life back. You feel what I'm saying? So I was raised with these values and it just became to the core of me and I was carried down with my life. And then you took it to the business world and then- Drive with it. Wow. What do you think? So this is interesting. So I was really sheltered and not from the streets and I guess a lot of people are not.
Natu Myers
So what are some things that you see? Because you have this consulting business, coaching business that you have right now as well. What do you see in terms of misconceptions that people who aren't from the street, what are they missing when it comes to business? What are people like me, for example, missing when it comes to applying, being successful in business without having that street perspective?
Kenny Bricks
Well, it's not necessarily just having a street perspective. It's about the grind. When you have nothing, everything is something. So we have gratitude for everything. We don't live in a victim mindset. We're not there, oh, we can't do this because that. Everything is a can-do attitude. I can do anything and everything because I came from there. I had nothing. See what I mean? Yeah. And you have to understand, I'm not risk-averse. I'm ready to take on any risk because I have no fear. The life I lived before, trust me. You see what I'm saying? So when it comes to taking risk or whatever, I'm ready to go in. I don't think about, oh, I can't do it. Will it happen? What happened? I just go in. I trust myself. I trust my intuition. I trust me to do the right thing and to make it happen. And because I do that and I have faith, I'm able to achieve certain things that a lot of people can't. A lot of people, you know, you have to understand. Also, I'm used to not being comfortable. I got comfortable being uncomfortable. It's unfortunate but a lot of people live in their comfort zone and your comfort zone is where your dreams go to die yeah okay so if you're comfortable get out of there start figuring something out you're not doing enough you're not doing nothing if you're not comfortable if you're not stressing if you're not you know have a quest have a quest
Natu Myers
How does somebody know when it's too much risk and then they end up losing everything what's the is there a balance or is it
Kenny Bricks
Well at the end of the day you got to do your due diligence. You know, like, can't go in gambling. I don't recommend gambling. Do you see what I said? Well said, yeah. But you definitely got to do your due diligence. You're going to do research. And when you start a project, you got to know why you're doing this project. The thing is, like, don't be an entrepreneur if you haven't figured out your five whys.
Natu Myers
There are five of them. Tell me.
Kenny Bricks
Your five whys. Well, the first thing is I'm going to ask you, if you want to be an entrepreneur, I'm going to ask you why. Then you're going to answer? Oh, because I want to change the world. All right. Why?
Natu Myers
Because, I mean, there's too much opportunity to change the world and it's not changing as fast as I want it to. Why you want to change the world? Why is it not changing fast enough? Because people are stuck in the status quo. Like, I mean, on my side, people, you know, they're stuck in 1994 when it comes to raising money and doing deals. I want to bring them to the future because it can be done way quicker, way better. Why? Because people have good ideas that are wasted because of incompetence, and it's not fair.
Kenny Bricks
Okay. I'm going to ask another why, but I want something emotional attached to it. Why?
Natu Myers
Well, I mean, I once wanted to raise money for an idea. I was kind of fed a lot of lies about, hey, you have to go to venture capital. You have to do this and do that. I found that they're all lies, and I found that the real way to do it is you find a business that's already making money, and then you just leverage that. And then that's the quickest way to raise money so you can get what you want to accomplish, what you want to get. Like, I don't like it when I see people that are young or inexperienced, maybe old, it doesn't matter. And then they're just fed lies about how it's done because people monetize selling a dream, selling a bunch of lies. So I don't like that. It's just, it's disgusting. It grosses me out. So, you know, I want to fix that.
Kenny Bricks
There you go. Because it has touched you. It has affected you. That's why you want to do something. And that's why you will always fight for it because he has touched you here. And that's why if it hasn't touched you emotionally, you will not fight for it. So having a business, you have to understand your why. Your why is the strongest part that gets you connected to the business. If you don't have a why, any obstacle or big challenges, you will quit. You're not going to go to the other side because you don't have a strong connection to why this purpose affects you so much and why you want to do it. Does that make sense?
Natu Myers
It does. I've heard this from like Patrick Bet-David, Simon Sinek. But it's weird though, because as a business owner myself, sometimes that's why, or I guess that's one why. But then sometimes I just have like a very deep desire to do this. And sometimes I forget about why, if I'm being honest. Sometimes I actually forget. Like that's the reason or one reason. But sometimes I'm just like, I know I'll die doing what, I'll fight for it so I die. I know it. But then sometimes it's hard for me to, in a day-to-day, in a mundane, in a day-to-day, to always remember that. So sometimes as you get caught in the shuffle day-to-day, it's hard. Do you have that experience? Or do you always remember why in the front of your face kind of thing?
Kenny Bricks
Yes. So you have a strong why, but the other thing too is that you got to practice gratitude. Have faith. As the other key elements to success is you got to practice gratitude and you got to have faith. And then you're able to manifest what you need to manifest. The thing is that everything you want out there is there. It's just you got to manifest it.
Natu Myers
What is manifestation?
Kenny Bricks
It's an experience. You haven caught that experience yet but that experience is being experienced by a lot of people You just haven experienced it yet And you just got to trust that you can experience it You got to cut all your limiting beliefs and really let yourself know that it coming to me. And then you got to create the vision because the things like you saying all these things that you want to do, but what is the vision? What's your destination? Do you have a destination? Have you created a destination? I mean, essentially to, I mean, it's so far, like in terms of the vision,
Natu Myers
Is to change the way people buy businesses and raise money. Okay. But then, you know, it's a lot of work to get there.
Kenny Bricks
Yes, but how do you eat an elephant? You just cut it into pieces. One bite at a time. Yeah. So the thing is, like, you start by impacting one life. Then you impact another life. You impact another life. That will compound, and those three lives will bring you 10 lives to impact. Then those 10 lives will bring you 50 lives to impact and those 50 lives will bring you 100 lives and 100 life will be a thousand life and 10,000 life and that's how you start impacting people's lives and doing the work that you were meant here to do that you want to do focus on one life to change and as you do that one life it'll keep compounding don't get overwhelmed by the end goal it's a journey and that's the thing with a lot of entrepreneurs sometimes they get overwhelmed with the end goal they have the big vision and yes you should definitely 10x any goals thank you thank you monkeys because that's the only way you'll be able you know you reach for the stars you'll land them on you reach for the moon you'll laying them on the stars, right? Totally. Reach big. But after that, reverse engineer and come back to and be like, who's this person I need to be today to reach that goal? Well, that person today would be doing this. He'd be working out. He'd be taking care of clients. He'd be making 150 calls a day. He'd be connecting with people every day. He'd be doing this, doing that, right? Then get that client. Close that call. Take care of that client. Get a testimonial from that client. Work from the next client. And you will grow organically, and that's the best growth in any business. It's really natural. When is that way? 100%. Yeah.
Natu Myers
You know, one thing is I was thinking about this a lot. Like, it was just different. I had chats with my friends and things like that about this topic. And a lot of it was about people that think small. Because ironically, like, we're talking about a friend and then a business guy. And, I mean, his business was doing, like, good money. Like you know a few like a few hundred k a year like decent money but um my other friend was kind of disappointed by by how they were just looking at the money and then that was it you know it was it was i can't really see details but it was kind of like like there was no it's like after i reached that much money then it's like whatever like there's no care about it no passion yeah yeah and it was an industry that the person didn't really care about it was just almost like like if somebody doesn't care about like you know putting cement on the ground and they don't view it as oh i'm changing the way people view cities it's just like hey it's a bunch of cements you know they had that view on it and it's like and then what's ironically the person didn't think that they can make a bigger business because they were just satisfied by using it as a lifestyle business uh is that what you mean or like you just don't really care about why you're doing it that that's kind of the the issue that people have if they don't know their why yeah but well it's not
Kenny Bricks
Just they know their why if you tell me you just want to have you want to have a business for the money, that means you have no passion. You have no passion for it. That means you'll never have fulfillment. At the end of the day, people do things to be fulfilled. Money is just money. I'm telling you, once you cross, if you're just chasing the money, once you have the money and you have nothing, you don't have a purpose, you don't feel fulfillment behind it, it don't mean shit. You won't feel good. Why do you think there's so many millionaires out there that are depressed or killing each other or killing themselves by suicide? You got somebody who has no money, but is happy as shit. It's true. Money is not happiness money is a vehicle to get what you want when you want but however don't go saying you want to have a business for money because I promise you can make as much money working for me or for an entrepreneur than working for yourself being an entrepreneur doesn't mean it's not for the money it's maybe for to own your time eventually because you definitely don't own your time in the first 10 years I promise you that right it might be because you want to impact lives I'm an entrepreneur because I like impacting lives I do that I do this man my whole life I've been the caregiver I take care of my family I take care of my friends I love giving jobs I love knowing that these families are doing great because of me yeah see what I'm saying I do I create jobs I create systems and and that's just the person that I am. And that's why right now in this moment in my life, I've stepped in as a coach because I want to impact a thousand lives. And just like I told you right now, I'm going to do it. I don't know how I'm going to scale it yet, but I know I'm going to start with one life, two life. I've actually done a couple of lives already, but you know, and I'm just going to keep impacting people's lives. And eventually I might say, I want to impact a hundred thousand lives, maybe a million lives. But I just know that this is what makes me happy. It makes me fulfilled. It makes, I'm fulfilled but I feel good when I make people happy when I help people and this is where I'm at today how do people choose this like if I were to sound like a robot I remember like hearing you know Tony Robbins different people uh yeah how do people choose like either like a metric or something that matters to them more than just like the money because the issues especially in my field in finance there are a lot of people that are just about like I before I even did the raises.com I worked for some people, really successful bankers in Toronto, and then everything was just about money. It was just like, hey, let's just make a few bucks. There was no purpose besides just making a bunch of cash. So how do people choose that? I don't know about how people choose that. Yeah. Or how would you coach somebody in getting that? Just getting money? No, getting money is like, that's one issue, but getting the why. How can somebody know why to do something? I just kind of knew it. I don't know how I knew it, but how do others know why they do something? You just got to talk to them. Sometimes people have trauma from back then. Yeah. Things that happened to them or in their life and they just haven't connected with that yet. Yeah. They just, I want to make money. Well, maybe because somebody who's never had money wants to have money. Maybe it's somebody you don't know when they were young. They saw their mom suffer, their parents suffer, and in their head they're like, yo, I got to make this happen because I see my parents suffer their whole life. So they don't know better. Oh, they're just chasing their money and then later on they'll realize like, I'm doing this because I saw my mom suffer. She was a single mom. It was this and that. See what I mean? Yeah. And then, you know, people that have parents right now, they have kids and they give their kids all the toys and everything. And why are you giving your kids all? Because I never had that when I was young. It's a trauma. That's really interesting. You know, this reminds me too, like Google, I think the founder, like Sergey Brin and Larry Page. I think they were behind during Russia, back when they were blocking the internet. And then it's kind of ironic because then they were like, hey, we want the whole world to have all the information in the world. It was like a reverse. Yeah. And then even Hugh Hefner, the Playboy guy, he was about to marry this girl. And then the girl cheated on him right before the marriage. And then he was like so angry that he said, oh, let me just get with every girl in the world and then make everybody be free. You know, it's kind of like a dark side of it. But it's kind of interesting when you see the biggest companies, how they started and then the story behind them.
Natu Myers
So I think what he's saying, what Kenny's saying here is really huge because I think a lot of you, you know, you want to grow your business. You want to raise money, make money. But it's more than just a bunch of cash because the issue is that that comes across in your messaging. So that's huge. Thank you. That's huge. I'll continue to reflect on it. So how, okay, so now people know their why, right? People have to know their why. So then how deep, there are levels to this, right? Like how deep, because if somebody just says like, oh, hey, I want to save the world or whatever, they don't care. Or some people care a lot. Like how, like for me, like I told you a bit of my why, how do I harness that? Like, basically, how do I get an A-plus in using my why in my business? Like, you get two entrepreneurs. One is not really using their why. One is using their why to the max. Like, how do you level up in using your why to go for your goals here?
Kenny Bricks
It's not about, knowing your why is just the foundation of it. But also is having a purpose and having your goals laid down and understand what is it that you're trying to actually achieve. Yeah. Right? Yeah. I just, I got the restaurant. I did the skate and play in the restaurant, right? My why was because of my mom and the whole situation when she was telling me to bring, you know, create connections, bring people together, and build memories. Yeah. That was my why. So when I created that business, that's the foundation of my business. See what I mean? Yeah. And I went through a lot of, we went through a lot of challenges with that business, man. A lot of money was poured and invested into that business. It was a rocky start. It was very tough. Just think about a space like that, over 40K a month. Yeah, I can imagine. And just rent expenses, right? Exactly. That business costs over 100, over six figures per month. Yeah. Okay? So it's very tough. Yeah. We could have quit so many times. Yeah. But because we have such a strong why, and then we had a top we got a we it was that was the first foundation why but then we realized something even bigger we realized that we're serving something higher and that's what kept it in the game because people will come and be like saying thank you for this space we needed this we needed this space in a city we need the community came up and be like we have no space that we could call home and this is a place we could call home this was our third base and we're just like, wow, this is bigger than us. We have to stay in the game because it's bigger than us. And yeah, when you do a business and it's hard, you're always going to think about, oh, well, you know, should we quit? Should we not? No, you just stay in the game. You know who the successful people are? The people who stuck in the game. Yeah. Who didn't quit. You only fail when you quit. Yeah. Everything else is learning lessons. Yes. So you just stay in the game. And you keep pushing, you keep pushing until you actually eventually win. Makes so much sense.
Natu Myers
It's impossible to win if you just stop, right? That makes so much sense. Yeah.
Kenny Bricks
I'm going to give you guys another story that happened back. So when I had my construction company, Home and Plus, two years in the business. Yeah. I'm running a company. Two years in the business, I'm having a hard time. Yeah. I'm having a hard time to run the business. And at that point, I'm not making money. My mortgage company is calling me. I'm late on my mortgage. They're sending me letters. And I'm looking at the letters. So then I go see my mom because I go ask my mom. I'm like, I go see my mom and I ask her, hey mom, can you lend me 2,500 bucks? I need to pay my mortgage and this and that. I'll pay it back to you. I'm thinking I'm going to sell my company for $15,000. At that point, I have a bunch of equipment, this and that. I'm like, I have a bunch. I think I want to sell. I'm stressed. I'm stressed. I'm tired. I don't want to do this no more. And at that point, my mom looked at me and she's like, no. My mom knew I was going to go straight back to the streets. Like, I'm not losing my son, right? So my mom's like, look, I'm going to give you $2,500. But you're going to come with me. We're going to go to Montreal. We're going to go pray. You're going to go pray on your situation. I'm like, mom, you know, right now, I don't need Jesus, mom. I need money. I don't need Jesus. Mom will look at me like, no, I'm serious. We're going to go to Montreal. We're going to go to Saint Joseph's Oratory. We're going to go pray. And you'll get the answer. I'm like, okay, my mic. She's like, well, you need the money, right? I'm like, yes, okay. So my mom was like, right. She writes me a check, 2,500 bucks. She's like, come pick me up tomorrow. That's Saturday morning. So Saturday morning, I go pick her up. We go to Montreal. As I'm driving to Montreal, I'm meditating on my problems. That's the thing. When people, there's problems, but don't just focus on the problem. Focus on solutions. And as I'm driving to Montreal, I'm thinking about my issues. I'm thinking about what's next. I'm thinking about what can I do to save my business right now. Because I have no money, no job, and I just borrowed money from my mom. And I had tears because I didn't ask my mom for money. I never asked my mom for money. I've been grinding and doing stuff since I'm young. I've been on the streets since I'm 15, 16 years old. Right? So I get to Montreal. As I get to Montreal, we go pray, do the whole thing. And this is not about, this has nothing to do with religion. This has to do with faith of meditating on your issues and focusing on solutions, okay? Some people will call it God. Some people will call it faith. Some people will call it whatever, okay? Meditating. So at that moment, we drive back to Ottawa after praying and everything. We drive back to Ottawa. As I'm driving back to Ottawa, I'm driving back to Ottawa. I'm thinking and I started thinking to myself, you know what? How did I get my first job? What did I tell you I did for my first job? You mean you had to divide, you had to have that little fight with that guy? No, no. But how did I get my first project? Door knocking. Door knocking. Yeah. So as I'm driving back, I'm like, well, how did I get my first project? Door knocking. I'm like, okay. I'm like, well, let's go back to the fucking basis. Basic, right? So I'm I'm like, you know what? I'm going to do more flyers when I get back home. I got motivated. I'm like, you know what? I got a little bit of money. I'm able to pay my mortgage, so I'm in the game again. Breathe. So I get back to Ottawa. I go, and I start printing a bunch of flyers again. I'm printing a bunch of flyers. And the next morning, I'm thinking to myself, who's got my money? And it's funny, because at that time, I had seen a little vlog, a little podcast online, and it was Grant Cardone. Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking of. It was Grant Cardone. He was talking about, you know, I was reading all his sales book and everything, and I'm really learning about sales. And he says, you know, when you want your money in the night, think about who's got your money. Yeah, I remember that. Who's got my money? And that's the attitude I had. I was like, who's got my money? You know? So I'm like, you know, I started thinking, I'm like, well, where can I go? And I'm thinking, okay, well, you know what? I'm thinking of an older neighborhood in Orleans where there's nice houses, but they definitely need renovations or something. So I went to Princess Louise So I go on Princess Louise in Orleans And then I start there I park my truck and I go door to door I keep going And you know, Princess Louise is like a big loop. I keep going, I keep going, I go around, keep going. Knocking on doors, talking about my services. Hey, I do this, that, here's a flyer, just wanted to let you know. I'm here if you want an estimate. We're going around the neighborhood today, and I'm giving out free estimates for any work you want to get done. You don't have to close. There's no commitment, but it's just to let you know that I'm here to help you out. If there's anything you want me to look at right now, that you're unsure about your house, any leaks or anything, I'm here to help you. I'm doing this. This is a courtesy call from my company today to you guys. No, no, no, no, no, no. Rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection, rejection. Keep going, keep going. And I'm like, I'm thinking to myself, whatever. I'm just going to keep going. I'm so glad I said that. Next house. I'm knocking on the door. The client comes out. Hey, I'm here. It's a courtesy check-in. If you have any renovations you'd like to get done, I'm here to give you a free estimate. It's right on the spot. Anything you need right now, I can help you, sir. He's like, well, as a matter of fact, I'm looking to get some interlock done. I want to get my driveway done. I want to get a patio done here and this and that and the third. I'm like, for sure. Boom. Measure. Boom, boom. Measure. Take my pen and my paper. I started drawing, friggin' scribbling on a piece of paper. The design is like, oh yeah, do this and that. He's invested in the project. I'm invested with him. We're talking about the whole project. The wife comes out. The wife comes out. I tell the wife, God, for you, do we do this? We do that. She's like, can you add this? I'll do anything right now. I'll do anything for you right now. And the client's cool. Boom, boom, boom. How much? $15,000. There we go. Deal. Signs. Gives me a deposit. Right there on the spot. And I closed the project for $15,000. There we go. Which was the same amount I wanted to sell my company for. The same amount I wanted to sell my company for. I closed them on the spot for $15,000.
Natu Myers
Do you think God was trying to tell you something?
Kenny Bricks
Yes. Like, I could cry when I think of that story because, first of all, my mom passed away. She saved my company. She saved my life. I could have been in jail after that. I could have been whatever. But she said, she's like, no, son. I believe in you. Go figure it out. And I did. And I had faith. And she's the first person who taught me what faith is and having gratitude. I legit left that job site, had tears in my eyes, got into the truck, drove straight to my mom's house, showed her the check. I had tears in my eyes. I couldn't believe it. Went to my mom, wrote her a check for what she paid me back, because I was like, no, thank you, thank you. When next week started the job, killed the job, and everything went smooth from there on, because I always believe after that.
Natu Myers
So that's when the business career started taking off after that?
Kenny Bricks
All right, we blew up after that. There we go. There we go.
Natu Myers
See, yeah, a lot of people listening, like I don't know what level you're at listening to this program, but I think it's very important to, you know, don't just make cash for the sake of making cash and just keep it surface level. I think it's important to understand why you're doing what you're doing. When it comes to what you're doing now, and I mean, obviously you have this new book. Yeah. You know, face yourself. So, I mean, if you can just briefly tell the audience, like, what exactly is in this book? And what am I going to learn when I read through this?
Kenny Bricks
So, the book is called The Face Yourself Method. Yeah. And in this book, there's a system. And this is the system that helped me figure shit out my whole life. And doing the system will allow you to prosper in anything. We're talking about it will help you with health. Help you with your finance, help you with relationship, help you with anything that you're trying to achieve. Because anything you want in life, there's something you must face. And the first person to face is yourself. And this is the whole system. The face yourself method is, okay, I'll give you guys a quick rundown. F, so it's the face it method. And the face it method is this. F is for face the truth. Face the truth. What is the truth? And I'm going to give you guys something that I had to face not too long ago because during the winter I was going through, I was doing a lot and I was focused, but I wasn't focused on myself. I was writing the book, I was doing a lot and I was drinking, I wasn't working out as much as I would hope and I should, I know better. Yeah, you're a strong guy, I remember that. Right? Yeah. Right, exactly. I used to do crazy, but I fell off in the winter, so I had to face myself. So basically I'm going to show you what I did for myself at that moment. Okay? Good right now. I was able to shred quick and push it. I faced myself. What was my truth? My truth was I was overweight. The truth was I was unhappy with the way I was feeling. The truth was I was overeating. I was drinking. I was not working out. And I had to face the truth. Right? So that's first things first. You got to face the truth because not knowing the truth, then you won't do nothing about it. Second thing is accept responsibility. I did this to myself. You have to accept responsibility with anything in life because if you leave it on someone else's hand, it won't get fixed. You know what? A good thing is if you fucked it up, it's freedom. Want to know why? Because you get to fix it. Because you blame yourself. Yeah. Right? Yeah. So if you're the problem, guess who's the solution? You. You are. Okay? So I had to accept responsibility. C is for creating a vision, create the vision and commit to change. You got to create the vision. In anything in life, if you don't have a vision, you don't have direction, you don't know where you're going. Yeah. So create the vision. Yeah. So I created the vision. Well, I want to look like this. I started looking at pictures of myself and videos of myself a couple years ago when I was really going hard. You know me. I'm looking at seven, 600, seven- Six plates, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Six plates, 700 plus pounds and I'm doing all this. I'm like, no, man. I want to get back in the shape. I want to frigging push myself again. I was feeling good. I was looking good. I created a vision. This is who I want to be. This is who I am. And I know what's up. Right? Then I had to commit to change. What is the change I have to commit to? Well, I stopped drinking. First things first. Good. I stopped drinking. I was like, you know what? I no longer drink. Good. I changed my identity. See what I'm saying? Yeah. I'm not drinking. You know what? I'm not going to eat past a certain time anymore. I'm going to eat nothing but whole foods. Okay? I'm going to work out five to six times a day. A week. Okay? I'm going to push myself. Okay? Those are the, this is what I had to commit to. I committed to change. And then E for execute immediately. You got to build momentum. Now if you start saying I'm going to start tomorrow, start next week, start next week, what happens? Next week turns to next month. Next month turns to another month. No, you got to execute immediately. You start something, you say something within 24 hours, get your boots on, let's make it happen. Right away, I went to the gym. Right away, I started eating better. Right away, everything I put on my list that I committed to change, I started doing right away. Execute immediately. It builds momentum. Once you build momentum, that's reinforcement that gives you courage to keep pushing further and further and get the ideal change you were looking for. It's true. That the face it method Once I done that within a short amount of time I down Actually this morning I weighed myself I 245 flat And when I started this I was 266 pounds Flabby. Like, I'm freaking back on track. I'm strong. I'm feeling good. I'm running every day. Like, I just, I'm doing what I told myself I was going to do, and I'm feeling good about it. There we go. I had to face myself. There we go.
Natu Myers
I could definitely, the reason why I reached out, I could definitely sense, I could feel that momentum. Right? That's why I reached out. Because I could see, you have the book, I could sense that there was something that was going for you here. And everybody, I recommend, yeah, get that book. I definitely recommend, Face Yourself Method. Oh yeah, a lot of lessons in here. Yeah, anywhere online. Online, I definitely recommend everyone watching, check that book out, get it. It's going to be in the show notes. But just seeing as, you know, I'm in the money business and you have some experience with financing. So would you be able to just like share like, you know, with your knowledge on that and on that world and see how it relates to maybe your business or what you've done before?
Kenny Bricks
Yeah. Well, I also offer financing for my renovations. Nice. So I have one problem out of Home and Plus right now. If you're an investor or you're just a homeowner and you want to sell your property, instead of using your money or if you don't have the funds, I will come in. I will assess the whole property for you. Let's say you want to buy a property, you want to flip it. I'll come in. I'll tell you your comps and we'll do the numbers to renovate. What's the after renovation value? And only renovate up to 70% of the after renovation value and leave you 30% margins. And then I'll invest it. My team will come in. We will do all the work. We will renovate everything. And then you'll be able to sell the property and make more money and build more equity in the property and sell it. And I'll finance up to $100,000 of it. So you're able to make, and it's an open loan. So then once you sell the property, you sell it and you literally just created more equity in your home and made more money for yourself and your real estate agent for a couple thousand bucks.
Natu Myers
Got it. Okay, okay. Let me get this straight. So, you know, property owner, you have your house, and then if somebody wants to do, you know, value add, for lack of better words, add value to the house so they make some more money when they sell, you know, they come to you for the loan, you know, up to 100K, you know, but it's 70% of the after repair value.
Kenny Bricks
Yeah, so after renovation value. Renovation value. We'll assess, we'll be like, okay, your property, I'm going to make it very easy. Your property could sell for 100K. And then, well, no, after renovating it, the property sells for 100K. All right, cool. Well, what's it going to take to make it sell for this much? Well, $70,000 of work. Or at that point, if we're going up to 70% of the after renovation value, and it'll take this much, and then you'll make an extra 30% on it. Now, that's the safe route. But there's other routes too. We could go and just put 50K in it or just put 50% in it and then you might potentially make that 50% on it. See what I mean? Every property has a different, it's custom. Got it. But we're able to assess everything in the start and do the comps and be able to see how much equity, how much money, how much value you could build into this property to make for yourself. And if you have an agent, your agent could make as well.
Natu Myers
Okay, that's huge. Okay, so you have that. And when it comes to, you know, your actual businesses, because one thing is that you have the mindset, but you also have like the tactics as well, because you have these businesses and then you have them in a way where businesses could be so good that, you know, even maybe one day in the future, like they could be sold potentially in the future or something. Who knows? Yeah. But what advice do you have on people who are, let's say somebody has a business and maybe they want to sell a business, maybe they want to buy a business. Do you have any advice to those people as well based on your experience?
Kenny Bricks
If you want to sell a business, look for a broker or look for companies who's able to sell your property for you or your business for you. And like yourself, you have the contact, they come to you and they're like, listen, I want to sell my business. They're going to come to you, connect with you, and you're able to find the funding, right? Well, connect with people who's in that field. Don't go ask a mechanic how to cook food. Don't ask a fucking chef how to fucking fix a car. Go to the right people who do this for real, and they will help you. Always find the right person. And it doesn't matter how much it costs because if they are the professionals, they're doing it right. Makes sense. Makes sense. You wouldn't get sushi at McDonald's. Exactly. That makes sense. That makes sense. Yeah, no, that's huge.
Natu Myers
You really remind me of one of our clients. His name was Cody, Cody Sechelski. And he used to, he had a rough upbringing. Let's just keep it at rough beginning. People can do their own due diligence. But he managed to change his life around. He got into construction, has a million dollar per year business. And we helped him buy an HVAC business. But it's kind of interesting how like a lot of people, they seem to kind of, you know, get started in construction. You know, when things are kind of, you know, just trying to get on track. And then bam, they just like crush it. So Kenny, man, so when it comes to, I guess, like if you were to have the audience remember one thing about you, you know, as they leave this podcast, what would it be?
Kenny Bricks
It's okay to suck. Nothing, there's nobody, everybody that's great in the world had to suck at one point before they became great. Don't have fear. Go for it. It's okay to be cringe. It's okay to figure it out. A great entrepreneur, I'll tell you what it is. It's somebody who hops off, gets on a plane, jump off the plane, and builds a parachute on its way down. So don't be afraid. Go for whatever you need to go in this life, and you are capable.
Natu Myers
That's brilliance. That's brilliance. Everybody, this has been Kenny. This has been Kenny with the Face Yourself Method. It's been awesome to have you. Hell of a guy. And the notes are going to be in the show. Direct the audience. Where should they go after this video? Where should they click on?
Kenny Bricks

Thank you, man. I appreciate this. This is freaking awesome, man. It's just $100. It's freaking nothing. Really? That's fucking sick. I think they have a discount. I think it's because they added discounts. Maybe that's why. But it's basically ... Because I was going to go to Diamonds, but I'm like, yo, I have to rent ... Because the camera kind of broke. I take it to the gym too much, and then I have to rent a ... It's too much ... Fuck, this is sick. A hundred bucks. You come here and do a bunch of content for an hour, and then break it down yourself. Yeah. They try to upsell you. They probably have VAs in the Philippines or whatever that try to do it, but you can use your team to do it, whatever. They give you the raw. Yeah. Yeah. They'll send it to your email. If not, I'll send it. You know, it's sick. Great concept. And you know what? It pays for itself. That's what's super cool. Yeah. Well, I mean, yeah, you get like one client or 10 books or whatever. And then how's this doing? Is this live? Is this launched? Yeah, it's launched. You can go straight on Amazon right now and buy it. It'll get shipped to your house. Okay. Okay. Very good. And this is the author's copy. That's why it says not for sale. Yeah, yeah. That's my copy. I gave it to you. Oh, that's sick, man. Yeah, yeah. You got the copy that nobody gets, bro. Here we go, bro. Yeah, yeah. This is huge. Yeah, yeah, bro. Read it. You'll love it. You'll love the stories. And yeah, give us a review after when you're done. I will. And check it out. But there's a lot of good gems in there. And you'll get a lot of my stories. I will. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, honestly, everything aside, I actually respect for doing this. I've been watching you for a year. Respect thank you man for sure no it's respect so congrats on on your progress for sure man for me I love connecting man that's the thing I love connecting with whoever whatever bro it's about us all connected together working together yeah yeah that's what makes the network determines the network you feel what I'm saying it's true it's true it's true thank you for the invite man this is freaking awesome man I love it and it was well done like this is fucking sick I did not expect this I haven't done an in person interview before like with like this I haven't done you know like these reels that you see with like freaking Tom B, all these guys. This is like our version. Yeah, for sure. It's like instead of like, you know, going to other people, watching other people, let's make our own self. Yeah, but that's how it should be. Yeah. That's it. I believe in creating. In life, okay, I'll tell you this. Yeah, what's good? I'm going to give you some more gems. Yeah, yeah. You want to be successful in life? You want to make a lot of money? You got to tell yourself, who are you? Identify who you are. Are you a consumer or a provider? If you're a consumer, you'll never be rich. If you're a provider, then you'll be able to provide and you will get the money from providing. Change your identity right away. From now on, make sure that you're a provider and not a consumer. You will notice you'll spend less money. You will do things differently. You will act differently. Your mindset, your thought process will be different because you are now a provider. Think of that. That is deep. This is deep information that was given to me by my mentors back then, Stefan Aarnio. Told me straight up, it's either your consumer or your provider. Who are you? It's deep shit right there.
